Jaime Mayor Oreja, the head of the list of Spain's opposition People's Party, is a controversial figure both in his homeland and on the European stage. A Basque, whose strident criticism of separatist terrorism made him the target of ETA, he once survived a grenade attack on his office.
Fourteen years later as Spain's interior minister he led a fierce crackdown against the group. But it was his handling of the aftermath of the Al-Qaeda-inspired bombings in Madrid as Spain went to the polls for the 2004 national elections, that he is best remembered. He and his People's Party attempted to blame the attacks on Basque nationalists in the hope of reaping a huge backlash vote, since they had insisted ETA could only be beaten militarily, despite growing pressure at the time to negotiate with them.
But when his government was beaten as thousands took to the streets to protest against apparent manipulation of news broadcasts on state TV, Mayor Oreja left national politics to head the Spanish section of the conservative European Peoples' Party group in the European Parliament.
However, even as an MEP he is a divisive figure, having not spoken at a full session of the parliament since 2007 - a fact that got him named as one of the "12 Terrible Candidates" blacklist put out by the Socialist grouping this week.
He also refused to support a European Parliament declaration condemning General Franco's regime on the 70th anniversary of the coup d'état that started the Spanish Civil War. "Why should I have to condemn Franco´s regime?" he said. "I did not condemn Franco, I praise the democratic transition. How can I condemn what represents, without a doubt, a very big part of Spanish society?"
