Greens dream of a breakthrough

By Mark Rodden/RFI

Is a Green wave about to sweep Europe? If the latest polls in France and elsewhere in are to believed, then Green parties could make a significant breakthrough in this weekend's elections.

Europe Ecologie, a coalition of Greens and ecologists headed by the iconic French-German MEP Daniel Cohn-Bendit is now the third most popular party in France, creeping up on the Socialists whose internal battles have turned voters off. The party is now polling at 13.5 per cent, a gain of 2.5 per cent on the last week that moves them ahead of François Bayrou's MoDem movement. And a special "deliberative poll" conducted with voters drawn from across the union by Europolis, found that when people were asked to think about the issues rather than give off-the-cuff answers, the Green vote jumped to 18 per cent overall.

Bruno Jeanbart, director of political studies at French polling company OpinionWay, says Europe Ecologie is polling particurlarly strongly in the Paris region. If polling trends are reflected in Sunday's vote, he believes the party could have at least six to 10 MEPS elected. Europe Ecologie's second most high-profile candidate, Eva Joly, stands a good chance of winning a seat along with Cohn-Bendit in Île-de-France.

OpinionWay's most recent poll, conducted last week before the latest TNS Sofres/Logica survey, has Europe Ecologie at around 10 per cent. Jeanbart says the green vote could reach a record high when the results of another green party, the Alliance of Independent Ecologists, are included.

"For the moment they have a pretty good level of votes," Jeanbart says. "We measured them at between 2 and 3 per cent of the vote, which means that we could have a total of the vote for the Greens in this election of between 11 and 13 per cent, for example."

Green parties are also polling strongly elsewhere in Europe. In Sweden, which is assuming the EU presidency in July, the Green Party has enjoyed a substantial boost in support.

"We've gained four percentage points so far in the campaign and we're now at 10 percent," says Carl Schlyter, an outgoing Swedish MEP standing for re-election. "I think it's because two-thirds of the Swedish population focus now on climate change and also protection of integrity on the internet and protection of human rights. The Greens have been on the forefront on both those issues."

Unlike in many countries where the economic crisis is most prominent in the minds of voters, surveys have shown that, among Swedes, climate and energy concerns are the most important election issues. Schlyter thinks this is because Swedes are starting to see the effects of climate change.

"Winters are shorter, storms are more frequent and we have seen the damage from such events. And it's also because we have a tradition of talking about environmental issues so we quickly adapt our policies - or at least our thinking - to the new climate debate. The problem is we lack ambition on actually fulfilling the thoughts in real legislation and that's where we hope a Green wave in the European Parliament can change that."

From talking to his European colleagues, Schlyter believes the "Green wave" could materialise ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December, citing strong campaigns in France, Britain and Greece.

"In Greece, for example, Greens have had 1 per cent always and suddenly they're running at around 8 or 9 per cent. So it's a Green wave, not only in the Nordic countries but also in the south, and that will put pressure on the other political groups to start adopting more Green policies."

German Greens are making waves with a series of TV ads like this one that satirise Europe's leaders and their stance on the environment

Dati doesn't, however, seem to have taken the move to Brussels terribly seriously, giggling at questions on policy at a recent party convention.

So far the SPD's negative TV and poster adverts have not put the popular Merkel directly in their sights, and instead have windows 7 certification
played on voter anxiety that right-wing parties are offering no radical solutions to the financial crisis and the economic downturn now ravaging parts of German industry. One poster says a vote for Merkel's Christian Democrats is a vote for poverty wages, while another likens her neo-liberal CDU allies to a grinning shark ready to feast on the weak. The most notorious, and popular, TV advert replays the braindumps oracle infamous George Bush shoe-throwing incident, with a conservative politician stepping into the former US president's shoes, as it were. He is shown addressing journalists, declaring that we must fall back even more on the "good old values" to get us out of the crisis, and that the only solution is for a more free market Europe. As he insists that the ccie "old solutions" of the 1980s, meaning greater regulation, will not work, one reporter takes off her shoe and throws it at him. Soon the politician is being bombarded with shoes, sandals and boots from everyone in the room. With Germany also celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Basic Law, the consensual constitutional framework for the post-war revival and reunification after the fall of the Berlin Wall, many questioned if this type of campaigning will ccnp dumps work as well as it does in the United States, where it was raised to a black art by successive Republican Party gurus like Karl Rove.
